Commissioned to develop a concept design for a mixed-use building as part of regeneration drive in the Middlesbrough Docks area.

The overarching concept draws upon the Industrial and nautical history of the site (through form) and the progressive movement of the Industrial age on which it was built, but also the forward thinking vision for the development of the Middlehaven area (through innovation in building systems and technology).

The form of the building projects a bold nautical theme with clear direction and intent. The North side displays a sculptural Bow form intending to give the building direction (views) towards the existing dock, Middlehaven and Port Clarence. Metaphorically, the building points to the progressive development of the Middlehaven area.

The proposals put forth the concept of an exposed concrete structure infilled with a mix of glass and steel mesh for the ground and First floor levels in the attempt to draw on the raw industrial history of the site and also to separate the commercial and ancillary functions located on these two levels. For the residential levels, it is intended that these volumes will be enveloped with a single lightweight rainscreen cladding system to ensure continuity and uniformity of the function behind the form. However, to provide interest on the singular material, the overarching concept of the façade is to provide a building skin that responds to progressive nature of development by creating elements that shift, transform, transcend and illuminate to form and form a dynamic structure in a technologically driven way.

The incorporation of green elements and planting throughout the building form an essential part of sustainable credentials and ‘green’ footprint of the building. The green roof technologies are intended to improve the sustainable drainage, microclimate, biodiversity, building performance, aesthetics and public space quality for its occupants.
