Gateway Studio, Gateshead
Gateway Studio is dance and related arts charity based in a historic building in the centre of Gateshead. Gateway Studio received support from the national lottery heritage fund to transform a Grade 1 listed building; Trinity Centre on Gateshead High Street into a centre of arts, heritage and community. This will include interpretation of the site’s significant heritage value, and a café that will generate fund to contribute towards a sustainable future.
MWE Architects won the commission to provide architectural services for the project based on an exciting concept to construct a contemporary pavilion type structure containing a multi-functional space along the frontage, whilst being sympathetic to the historical building. The interior proposals will transform the dated interior to provide exciting spaces for dance and related arts, in addition to providing heritage facilities.
In order to reinforce a clear legibility between the old and new elements, the concept of impermanence is contrasted with the permanence of the original buildings. The concept of impermanence is also reflective of the performing arts which area associated with movement, motion, emotion, tension, release etc. This is exhibited in the design of the form, massing, materials and detailing of the new architectural elements.
