In collaboration with Countylife Homes, this project delivers two new large homes on an elevated site at the west end of Newton village. Forming part of the existing stone-built fabric, the scheme occupies an infill plot where each house is carefully positioned to respond sympathetically to the historic vernacular while maximising superb views over the Tyne Valley and surrounding Northumbrian countryside.
The design draws directly from the traditional Northumbrian vernacular of the village. Ashlar and random rubble stonework, natural slate roofs, chimneys and timber windows root the new buildings in their context, maintaining continuity with the character of Newton. While traditional in appearance, the homes are constructed using a modern timber frame system — providing a highly insulated, sustainable solution that integrates the most up-to-date building technologies for contemporary living.
Internally, the layouts are oriented around natural light, views and connections to gardens and outdoor space. The arrangement of living areas emphasises spatial flow and generous proportions suited to family life, complemented by refined material finishes and carefully considered detailing. The outcome is a pair of distinctive new homes that combine contextual sensitivity with modern standards of comfort, reinforcing the architectural identity of the village.
