Nene Cottage, Northumberland
This modern reimagination of an ‘Arts and Crafts’ home takes site context and location as key drivers to redesign a new home in Northumberland. Consisting of three beds, an open plan living, dining and kitchen space, and formal lounge spaces, the new building reflects the traditional context of the local area, whilst allowing for modern 21st century elements.
A series of patio spaces to the front and rear give a series of opportunities for outdoor experiences, linked to inside through a glazed bifolding bay. An oak porch gives formality to the entrance.
In all scenarios, we first consider retaining the existing heritage. In this case, the original house itself was unfit for living, restricted by its location on site and in a dilapidated condition. The new proposal uses the existing building pad to extend a property with presence from the street.
