Priestfield Barn Conversion

Priestfield Barn Conversion

Project details

The conversion of a traditional stone barn at Priestfield House has created a contemporary home that celebrates its rural setting while retaining the building’s agricultural character. Located in Burnopfield, the barn forms part of a historic group of buildings and has been carefully adapted to provide modern accommodation within a robust stone envelope.

Externally, the design emphasises authenticity and craftsmanship. Original stonework has been repaired and repointed, complemented by new slate roofing and timber doors detailed with wrought-iron ironmongery. Slimline glazing and discreet new openings provide natural light and views across the countryside, while ensuring the retained elevations remain legible as part of the farmstead’s historic fabric.

Internally, the conversion contrasts the solidity of stone walls with light, open living spaces. Exposed roof trusses and natural oak floors establish a warm material palette, while large sliding doors connect the main living areas to the courtyard. The kitchen, positioned beneath the original timber structure, highlights the barn’s volume and character while providing a functional contemporary hub for the home.

This project demonstrates how sensitive interventions can unlock new life in redundant agricultural buildings, balancing conservation with modern requirements. The result is a dwelling that sits comfortably within its landscape while offering generous, inspiring living spaces tailored to twenty-first-century living.
