Mariners Cottages, South Shields

Mariners Cottages, South Shields

Project details

The Master Mariners’ Cottages for a long time formed almost the only building on the sea front in South Shields. They were originally intended for the occupation of aged members or the widows of members of the Master Mariners’ Asylum and Annuity Society founded in the town on January 28, 1839.  Its object was to provide a fund for paying annuities to aged and infirm and poor master mariners, their widows and orphans, and to build asylums for their occupation.

Prior to listing, the buildings would appear to have been subject to none or little development control, and as a result, the rears of the dwellings have been altered in some areas extensively, hiding the original building format.  In other area’s the buildings remain virtually unchanged.

Through consultation with Peter Derham (the Historic Buildings officer), and South Tyneside Development control, MWE were involved in the extensive renovation and repairs to the properties. Generally where possible existing historical architectural features were made good and repaired, rather than replaced with new to match existing.

By carrying out the proposed renovation works,  the longevity and preservation of the dwellings should be assured, as well as improving the living conditions of the residents.
